Happy Friday, world traveler!
As part of our Field Trip Friday series, we will be sharing our favorite virtual field trips so that you can learn all over the world – from anywhere in the world. Today we are taking a trip to the green and gorgeous city of Houston, Texas.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has virtual experiences under a category that they call #MFAatHome where you can experience the museum’s recent exhibitions in the comfort of your home. There are also several behind the scenes conversations with the art director and curator from select galleries, as well as films and panel discussions about the artwork that they display. As part of this campaign, they have a DIY Art Activities series where artists show you how to make your own collages, masks, abstract art, and more. Pro tip: Don’t miss their fun activity guide for making your own Pointillism art right at home!
The Galveston Bay Foundation
The Galveston Bay Foundation has created a miniseries of virtual field trips called At Home with the Bay. During this series, conservation specialists teach kids about topics relating to the Bay Foundation, like the wetlands, oysters, and cool microscopic ecosystems. Each activity in the series has a virtual lab, a fun conservation craft, a chat with a bay biologist, and an outdoor activity that kids and parents can do together while maintaining social distancing.
Edu-Katie: Pearland’s Parks Naturalist
The City of Pearland has made their YouTube channel a staple since March. On the last Friday of every month, they share videos with Pearland’s Parks & Recreation Parks Naturalist, Edu-Katie. She picks a park-related topic in each episode and explains how everything in our ecosystem is connected.
The Houston Audubon Society
The Houston Audubon Society has several virtual field trips of their own here. You can learn about hawks and owls, see baby birds hatch, and find out which wildlife is native to Texas. There are a couple of live bird cams for users to enjoy, including a serene bird feeder cam. There is even a Bolivar Flats Bird Cam that can be controlled by viewers to zoom in and see wild birds in their natural habitat.
